Its distinction as one of the world's driest places also makes the Atacama Desert one of its best astronomical observation points. Scientists from Europe, Japan and the United States are now undertaking one of the most ambitious projects to take advantage of the crystal-clear view. ALMA, when completed next year, will allow them to look out to some of the most distant galaxies in the world.
